As a financial institution moving billions of pounds of customer money in more than 70 countries, Wise must have bulletproof financials. We are now looking for an Area Controller to join our Finance Team in London. This role is a unique opportunity to have an impact on Wise’s mission by ensuring timely and accurate financial data as well as building mature processes and scalable control environment.
As an area Controller you will be overseeing the month-end closing process for one of Wise’s products, ensuring that related controls have been executed and ultimately signing off on the Products Financial Statements. Specific responsibilities include::
A list of some of the key responsibilities include:
Ensuring various teams execute their financial closing tasks in an accurate and timely manner;
Identifying missing or insufficient processes and taking initiative to find solutions, in collaboration with other teams, both within and outside the Finance;
Ensuring the balance sheet and income statement are fully substantiated and key variances are understood in relation to underlying changes in the product.
Working with analysts to ensure sufficient tooling to help explain period variances and providing commentary on those variances to support monthly group level signoff.
Completing documentation to show how the product operates end-to-end through Wise, including how accounting entries are generated and controlled.
Participate in the external audit by replying to external auditors’ questions and information requests;
Actively participating in team planning, actively highlighting key items to Implementation Managers to help remediate items that could impact the accuracy of the financial statements for your product.
Maintaining relationships within the Finance Tribe and with all other stakeholders to ensure information sharing and properly manage expectations.
Signing off on controls and assessing their effectiveness in Audit Board, the firms risk and control repository.
Reviewing / posting journal entries to remediate known gaps in the accounting flow, to ensure financial statements are accurate and without material misstatement.
Supporting entity controllers through clear communication of your products variances and performance in the period impacting specific entities.
A bit about you:
Significant experience (6-7 years) in either financial controlling, financial audit, financial advisory or management accounting. You have a working knowledge of IFRS.
You are a self starter and can organise your own work
Not afraid of challenges and making decisions, can work autonomously and take initiative
Cooperative attitude and ability to manage deadlines
You are a great communicator. You can adapt your communication style to different audiences. You’re able to persuade others and you aren’t afraid to challenge something when you need to.
Keen to challenge people and drive changes – can think outside the box and provide long term vision
(extra benefit) Professional finance qualification such as the ACA, ACCA, CPA or equivalent.
(extra benefit) You have worked in a multinational environment across different cultures and countries.
(extra benefit) You have worked in regulated environments, Fintech or Financial Services.

Strong written and verbal communication
Ability to challenge
Ability to own issue remediation through to completion
Financial Qualification (e.g. CFA, CIMA, ACCA or other relevant qualification)
