Job Description

We are looking for a talented Frontend Engineer to join our Design Systems team.

Wise.com and the Wise iOS and Android apps are the shop-window of Wise. With ever-growing demands to continue to expand on, scale up and build out different parts of our website and apps, it has been essential to build a dedicated design system.

As a Design Systems team, we continuously explore, design, and author a wide range of foundations, building blocks, and tooling used by all our products and landing pages. But it’s not just about meeting the product team’s feature needs – as brand guardians, we must ensure that everything we release reinforces the trust gained from our customers over the years. To achieve that, we tend to look at problems from different angles, be it UX, scalability, efficiency, consistency, performance, widely understood accessibility, motion, design and technical documentation, and more.

Our work requires close partnerships with technical, as well as non-technical, audiences: Product Designers, Content Designers, Brand/Creative Designers, Web, iOS, and Android Engineers, Design Tooling Specialists, Vulnerable Customers, and more.

As a Design Systems Frontend Engineer, you will:

  • Participate in or lead other engineers through the full lifecycle of a feature, from its discovery and technical specification to authoring, testing, documenting, releasing, presenting, and eventually maintaining it.

  • Help troubleshoot, fix, and support other product teams in resolving problems related to our work.

  • Represent and champion Design Systems initiatives in front of both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Collaborate closely with teams across the company to deliver impactful experiences to the Design Systems’ internal and external consumers.

  • Support new Wise engineers, helping them ramp up on the Design System, tooling, and best practices.

  • You grow continuously as a product engineer while contributing to the growth of others.

Qualifications

To thrive on the team you will have:

  • Good knowledge of and proficiency in authoring semantic HTML together with modern, scalable CSS.

  • A good and practical understanding of JavaScript and browser technologies.

  • Experience with modern frontend frameworks, such as React (and TypeScript) or similar.

  • A desire to create clean, resilient code and cover it with testing tools such as Jest, Testing Library, Storybook, Cypress, or similar.

  • An appetite for building delightful user experiences.

  • High attention to detail.

  • Strong commitment and hands-on experience building accessible interfaces with inclusive design in mind, following WCAG/ARIA best practices, and using testing tools to improve usability.

  • The ability to explore, discuss, evaluate, and communicate, often complex, technical problems as a critical thinker – with curiosity, open-mindedness, clarity and objectivity.

  • The ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional peers as well as solve problems independently and proactively.

  • An eagerness to learn and share knowledge alike, contribute to and improve technical documentation and RFCs.

We’d also love to hear more if you:

  • Have contributed to and helped grow design systems or pattern libraries.

  • Have had any exposure to authoring tooling and automation.

  • Have worked with Content Management Systems and concepts such as headless CMS.

  • Are comfortable navigating Figma or similar design tools.

But don’t worry – we know it’s uncommon for a candidate to have all the required skills, and we fully support everyone in learning new ones with us. So if you have only some of the skills listed above and are eager to learn more, we’d love to hear from you!

What does success look like in a year?

  • You have delivered and led multiple impactful customer-facing changes

  • You have embedded well with the team, its goals, and your role in contributing towards them

  • You understand our product and customers

  • You ensure the reliability of our web solutions
