Job Description

We are looking for a motivated, decisive, practical and detail-oriented Indirect Tax Lead to join our team.  Our Tax team makes sure that we operate policies and governance procedures that ensure we comply with tax laws in every territory we do business. With a high level of autonomy and responsibility, you’ll work across teams at Wise to manage our overall tax strategy, reducing risks, costs and keeping us compliant.

Your mission

  • Take responsibility for leading the Indirect Tax function at Wise enabling us to ensure compliance in 20+ markets.

  • Providing timely, accurate, practical and proactive VAT advice to the rest of our teams.

  • Develop strong relationships with key stakeholders to identify their needs and priorities, to enable you to work together to manage indirect tax risks globally. This can be complex given the fluid and autonomous nature of teams. Key stakeholders include other members of the tax team, financial controllers, accountants, product and expansion teams. 

  • Build up a network and work efficiently with external advisors, being fully aligned with the rest of the tax team, to manage indirect tax exposures, be up to date on ongoing compliance obligations and understand the impact of expansion as Wise develops its global footprint and service offerings.

  • Undertake a review of indirect tax positions taken in material markets and our approach to engaging with tax authorities for rulings as well as handling of tax authority & financial auditors enquiries relating to indirect taxes.

  • Pragmatic and commercial involvement working with the tax implementation team to support various projects including but not limited to indirect tax return automation, e-invoicing, transfer pricing, invoice coding reviews, end to end process mapping and documentation. 

  • Oversight & in-depth understanding of processes and controls over indirect tax return preparation and submission, ensuring fully documented review processes and timely filings. 

  • Be an engaged, pragmatic and pro-active member of the tax team, helping to make indirect tax more accessible and understood across tax and the wider business- including providing training to finance teams.

  • Determining tax provisions and communicating these to stakeholders, as well as determining and enacting action plans and process improvements.

  • Helping the Head of Tax in managing and reporting tax risks, tax provisions, and risk incidences to be escalated, as well as supporting initiatives to develop the Tax and Finance function.

  • Managing, leading and growing the indirect tax function (team of 2-3 individuals). 

This Role Will Give You The Opportunity To

  • Own your own path to success - you’ll have a high level of autonomy and responsibility to grow our indirect tax function as well as participate/lead cross team projects.

  • Work in an international Tax & Finance Team and learn a lot about the tax around the world, fintech and driving financial sustainability of a fast growing company.

About you

  • You have at least 10 years indirect tax experience with either big 4 or in-house - some experience with financial services indirect taxation required.

  • Able to understand and hands-on design processes and controls to manage compliance obligations and risks associated with large volumes of complex data.

  • You have a solid understanding of UK and/or EU VAT and cross-border indirect tax principles.

  • You have the ability to work with and influence stakeholders on indirect tax matters at all levels of internal and external stakeholders.

  • You are a self-starter and can organise your own work & time.

  • You are not afraid of making decisions, can work autonomously and take initiative.

  • You are able to work independently, you assume responsibility and you make your own judgement. 

  • You are prepared to take ownership over complex new areas and solve problems with no or very limited guidance.

  • You demonstrate attention to details but can summarise key messages succinctly, verbally and in writing, adjusting your style and level of information based on the target audience.

  • Experienced in leading and developing people, e.g. providing ongoing feedback and development opportunities.
