Analytics career map

Career maps are a tool we use to map out all the different levels within a team. They give clarity on what we expect at each level and help our people know how they can progress in their team. They also help us evaluate impact and pay our people consistently and fairly.

We’re sharing our Analytics team levels and salaries to give you an idea of where you might fit, what’s expected at each level and how you can progress at Wise.

While career map frameworks are a useful guideline, they should never replace one-to-one career development and coaching conversations. All our employees go through an annual 360 feedback review, where we refine our individual development plans. This framework helps our Product leads have more structured conversations with their team members about progression and understand what they need to do to increase their impact on our mission.

When you’re thinking about your skills in relation to these levels, always remember it’s not a tick box exercise, but rather a guide to show the kind of impact we expect from our people as they progress in their journey at Wise. Different roles and teams have varying expectations on certain areas, but on the whole these expectations are common across all roles.

How does it work?

There are two components the Analytics career map: 

✅  Responsibilities: They determine your level and show the expectation that impact increases as you go through the levels.

🛠  Skills: Guidance as to what should help you deliver the responsibilities.

In every quarterly planning sprint, you will also set:

Objectives: These are specific individual Objective Key Results (OKRs) for a subset of your responsibilities.

Execution

Helping ensure that analysis is being conducted on highest impact areas and that it's being done correctly, either as an Individual Contributor or helping coach or lead others.

Junior Analyst: You can structure your own low-complexity projects. You proactively agree on timeframes with leads. You meet deadlines and communicate delays and blockers. You conduct analysis with clear results that are acted upon by the team. You help improve the team’s Looker and data interpretation skills.

Analyst: You can structure your own projects with medium-complexity. You proactively agree on timeframes with leads. You meet deadlines and communicate delays and blockers. You can build well-structured, traceable and updatable analysis. You can help improve the team’s Looker and data interpretation skills.

Senior Analyst: You can structure highly complex projects independently and support others in doing so as well. You can set your goals and choose the right tools to execute at a fast pace. You can design scalable models and experiments and sense check your own and other’s work. You can coach or lead 1-2 Wisers. You develop your technical and soft skills.

Lead Analyst: You can help enable multiple analysts to solve a problem. You can maintain a healthy execution pace within the Tribe. You can advise on approaches that ensure quality work and if needed you can deliver high impact projects independently. You can lead 3-9 Wisers. You can create cohesion, the right balance of skills and provide adequate time for the Wiser to develop.

Lead of Leads Analyst: You can help the leads within the tribe solve analytical problems and people topics. You’re able to maintain a healthy pace of execution across the whole Analyst Team. You can set the bar for quality and share best practices across Tribes. You can lead the leads in the Tribe and coach them on topics around team building.

Steering

Influencing teams and tribes with thoughtful KPIs and OKRs and build strong relationships with others to find alignment.

Junior Analyst: You can contribute to the team’s understanding of problems and help measure progress. You can prioritise your weekly tasks.

Analyst: You influence the team’s direction and design some of their KPIs and OKRs. You prioritise your work for the month, with assistance.

Senior Analyst: You partner with leads to craft the team’s vision. You influence all the OKRs of the team and help on some of the tribe’s as well. You independently prioritise your own work and contribute to the prioritisation decisions of the team.

Lead Analyst: You partner with the other lead’s of the Tribe to craft a vision, while ensuring their and the team’s OKRs align. You actively help the whole Tribe prioritise through analytical insights. You make sure there’s no duplications.

Lead of Leads Analyst: You identify cross-Tribe opportunities and parter with other Lead of Leads to kick off projects. You give feedback on the priorities of the tribe and ensure that Wise is focussing on the largest opportunities in the field.

Analytics Product

Ensuring that our data assets are in a good state and being leveraged as widely as possible.

Junior Analyst: You own one or more of the team’s data assets e.g. KPI dashboards. You share learnings and analysis that the team uses.

Analyst: You own the Tribe’s data domain and you’re the point of contact for it. You share learnings and analysis the tribe uses.

Senior Analyst: You own multiple data domains and assets of the Tribe. You share the data assets and analysis of the Tribe across Wise to help boost the impact of other teams.

Lead Analyst: You ensure the Tribe’s data assets are owned and healthy. You maintain a list of Data science opportunities. You share the data asset and analysis of the Tribe across Wise and ensure the documentation is in order.

Lead of Leads Analyst: You make sure that Wise’s data assets are keeping pace with the needs of the teams. You maintain a data-driven culture at Wise, so that non -analysts can answer their own questions as well.

Cross-Tribe Responsibilities

Collaborating with other analysts across the team, working across multiple domains.

Junior Analyst: You take part of analyst meetups and knowledge sharing sessions. You informally meet with candidates and are a brand ambassador.

Analyst: You work on cross-tribe projects. You participate in interviews.

Senior Analyst: You lead initiatives across the Tribe with a Lead analysts support. You run hiring for some of the analyst roles if you’re formally leading others.

Lead Analyst: You identify and lead initiatives across the tribe. You lead hiring for Tribes. You identify gaps in skills. You support other leads with topics around People.

Lead of Leads Analyst: You identify and lead cross-Tribe initiatives and coach others in their delivery. You run final interviews and set the bar for hiring. You inspire others and are a role model for the company’s values.

Meta Skills

A complementary set of non technical skills that we rely on to ensure we maximise the impact from our analyses e.g. communication skills.

Junior Analyst: You structure, define and break down smaller projects to manage the tasks. You communicate ideas in concise and logical steps. You build relationships with all the members of the teams and pass on technical and data interpretation tips. You exhibit potential or a strong curiosity in understanding the domain.

Analyst: You structure, define and break down smaller projects to manage the tasks. You communicate ideas verbally and in writing, with clear summaries and narratives. You build relationships with all the members of the teams and pass on technical and data interpretation tips. You exhibit potential or a strong curiosity in understanding the domain.

Senior Analyst: You propose and choose solutions to open-ended projects e.g. How to reduce usage of Wise’s liquidity buffer. You tell compelling, actionable stories. You identify areas of improvement for others, choosing the right challenges to evolve them. You use rare knowledge in a domain and you have the ability to link multiple areas or external or market understanding. You define job descriptions and assess the skills of candidates at interviews.

Lead Analyst: You can break down large projects, so multiple analysts can contribute to them. You articulate the vision of the team. You’re able to tailor your communication style to the audience. You can coach through challenging questions. You write PIPs and actively monitor the people on it. You deeply understand your domain through external sources and you include available tools. You can assess candidates in all interviews and you can source candidates. You’re also the spokesperson for Wise. You can bring the team together. You genuinely listen and can put yourself in others shoes.

Lead of Leads Analyst: You can use your judgement to foresee issues on large projects and structure the work to avoid them. You’re able to get clear messages across to large groups. You can create confidence in the work in others. You can help individuals with their careers. You keep up to date with the latest industry developments and suggest solutions. You plan for the right balance of skills within the team. You can help reduce dependencies on people. You inspire others by constantly standing for our values. You can bring out the best in Wisers.

Technical Skills

The set of technical skills that we rely on to ensure that we deliver our analyses e.g. programming in SQL.

Junior Analyst: You create reports with actionable results by the team. You lay out analyses in an easy-to-follow manner. You transform data for reporting tables. You use version control and schedule regular tasks. You apply basic statistics concepts – percentiles, types of averages, significance, regressions.

Analyst: You build explores. You design user friendly dashboards that bring insight without overwhelming You make sure that data is traceable and complex models are well structured. You use advanced SQL e.g. Window functions and UDFs. If the team needs it, you can perform basic tasks in Python, R or on similar programs. You apply basic statistics concepts – percentiles, types of averages, significance, regressions.

Senior Analyst: You build clear and flexible BI models and work with engineers to capture necessary data. You design re-usable models that can be understood by a new reader. You write modularised, readable and performant SQL (Leads don’t have to do this all the time, but they have to understand how it’s done). You review PRs and spot bugs. For most teams: You can perform basic tasks in Python, R or similar programs (indication of curiosity and aptitude) If the team needs it: You perform advanced tasks and apply software development principles: DRY, test-driven development, OOP and modularisation. You design and run statistically sound experiments. You judge whether the results are meaningful and avoid common pitfalls.

Glossary

Tribe: Here we mean either an official collection of teams
Team: A smaller unit within a Tribe
Cross-team: Involving multiple teams in the same tribe
Cross-tribe: Involving multiple tribes
Tribe Analysts: Analysts within a specific tribe
Analytics Team: All analysts across all tribes
Data asset: Anything that enables analytics: a table, pipeline, set of mixpanel events, lookML model, dashboard
Data domain: A set of data that is specific to a particular team or problem – e.g. Payin or Liquidity data. “Owning a domain” means becoming highly knowledgeable on the data and topic, taking responsibility for sharing knowledge, and working with engineers to fix and create new data.
KPIs v OKRs: KPIs are usually a set of important numbers to monitor. Each quarter, some of these KPIs may become specific OKRs that are targeted for improvement.
Wisers: When thinking about the coaching responsibility for Senior and Lead analysts, the term Wisers refers to Analysts, aspiring Analysts, CS data domain experts, knowledge experts etc.
