Life as an ESG Intern

Posting date: 03/10/24

My name is Niv, and I’m currently pursuing a degree in Law with English Law at the University of Aberdeen. This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to intern at Wise as an ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) intern. My role involved working closely with the ESG team to help drive Wise’s sustainability initiatives, ensuring that the company’s practices align with ethical and environmental standards.

Expectations vs reality

I initially expected the internship to be heavily focused on research and report writing, with a lot of time spent behind a desk analysing policies and legal frameworks. While research was indeed a significant part of the role, the reality turned out to be far more dynamic and engaging than I had imagined.

From day one, I was actively involved in meetings, brainstorming sessions, and even some decision-making processes. The hands-on experience and the level of responsibility I was given exceeded my expectations, making the internship both challenging and fulfilling.

My key responsibilities

My main tasks as an ESG intern included conducting thorough research on sustainability practices, assisting in the development of Wise’s ESG strategy, and helping to prepare datasheets for various stakeholders.

One of the most challenging yet rewarding responsibilities was working on a Corporate Social Responsibility platform for Wisers to make the best use of their volunteer days. This involved liaising with external teams to streamline the implementation process, troubleshooting technical issues, gathering feedback from pilot users, and making necessary adjustments to enhance the platform's usability. The experience not only tested my project management skills but also gave me the satisfaction of knowing I contributed to promoting volunteerism across the company.

Learning and growth

Throughout the internship, I’ve gained a deep understanding of ESG principles and how they are applied in a company setting. I’ve also developed skills in data analysis, project management, and public speaking. Outside of my direct responsibilities, I participated in weekly intern lunch and learns, where I had the chance to interact with professionals from different departments and learn about various aspects of the business. These sessions were invaluable in broadening my perspective and enhancing my knowledge beyond my immediate role.

My team

The support from my lead and buddy has been instrumental in my growth during this internship. My lead provided guidance on complex tasks and offered insights into the broader impact of our work. One memorable interaction was during a dynamic brainstorming session where we collaboratively developed the methodology for selecting the best organisation to partner with for our social impact initiatives.

The discussion was intense and insightful, as we debated various criteria to ensure the potential partner aligned with Wise's core values and social impact delivery mandate. We considered factors such as the organisation's track record in driving meaningful change and impact measurement, and its alignment with our ESG goals.

The session highlighted the importance of strategic thinking and collaboration, as we worked together to create a framework that would guide Wise in finding the best partnership to truly reflect our commitment to social responsibility. This experience deepened my appreciation for the thoughtful, mission-driven approach that Wise takes in making decisions that affect both the company and the broader community.

Career goal impact

This internship has solidified my desire to pursue a career in ESG. The fast-paced, dynamic nature of the work has been both challenging and exhilarating, and I've found myself thriving in this environment.

The intensity of the projects, the need to think critically and act quickly, and the opportunity to make a tangible impact on both the company and society have all contributed to my growing passion for ESG.

I've realised that this is the field where I can combine my legal background with my commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. The experience has not only affirmed my interest but also fueled my ambition to continue working in this area, where I can be part of driving meaningful change.

Advice for future interns

Take every opportunity to learn and engage with your team. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek feedback—your colleagues are there to help you grow. Make the most of any networking opportunities, as they can provide valuable insights and connections for your future career.

Finally, approach your tasks with enthusiasm and an open mind; you never know what new interests or skills you might discover along the way!
