From WiseWomenCode to Graduate Engineer
Hello! My name is Jennifer, and I'm a self taught software engineer currently working in one of the engineering platform teams at Wise. My journey with Wise began when I joined as a customer support agent in 2021. I then moved into one of the FinCrime teams to grow my knowledge and gain a more holistic view of what we do.
In 2023, I participated in WiseWomenCode. This was a fun packed 3 day technical program designed for people wanting to break into the tech world.
We covered many topics from software engineering to data science, cybersecurity, and machine learning.
I also got to meet other engineers at Wise, which fueled my passion to want to become a ‘software engineer’.
At the end of WiseWomenCode, we got the opportunity to sit the same technical test required for the graduate application. If successful, we’d be given the opportunity to interview for one of the technical graduate roles.
Before attempting the engineering test, I made a commitment to enhance my coding skills. I enrolled in a programming bootcamp on Udemy, which provided me with essential programming knowledge and allowed me to study alongside my job at Wise.
After completing the bootcamp, I sat the technical test and applied for the graduate engineering role. I successfully joined the engineering team in September as part of the new 2024 graduate cohort.
Joining the engineering team as a graduate
When I first joined the engineering team, I had my fair share of apprehensions. I worried about appearing inexperienced, especially because I didn't study computer science in a university. My degree is in science and technology, and I majored in gene technology, but I decided my passion lay more within technical engineering.
I'm part of the platform team whose mission is to improve the work experience for engineers by maintaining the infrastructure and tools that support software development and deployment.
My experience within the team has been completely the opposite to my initial worries. Since joining, I’ve discovered that my team is not only knowledgeable but also incredibly kind and supportive. My team lead provides excellent mentorship, and offers teaching sessions that result in many 'Aha!' moments for me. Their celebration of my small wins has greatly boosted my self-esteem and overall confidence.

I’ve acquired numerous skills, such as implementing backend logic, understanding Golang syntax, monitoring application health in production, troubleshooting, and enhancing website accessibility.
We are also assigned a buddy when we start to provide guidance and help us integrate into our teams. I owe a lot to my buddy and my team. My buddy has been incredibly patient and supportive, ensuring I never feel alone. One memorable interaction was our team trip to London, where they made sure to coordinate our schedules so I wouldn't be lonely in my first week.
Joining the WiseStart Engineering Academy
The onboarding experience in London was unforgettable. We stayed in a hotel together, and enjoyed team-building activities alongside our company onboarding sessions. These moments allowed me to bond with the other graduates and now I feel even more welcome at Wise.
I also participated in an engineering bootcamp with the other technical graduates. This introduced us to Wise’s tools and coding environment, enabling us to hit the ground running once we got into our teams.
I am excited for our 'WiseStart Engineering Academy' to begin.
Here, I'll get to learn more technical skills that will help me to become autonomous, and bring me closer to my dream of becoming a full-stack developer.
During my first year, the ‘Academy’ runs alongside my work within the platform team, and is designed to equip us with essential skills we’ll use daily as engineers at Wise. It combines live lectures with hands-on sessions, covering topics like mastering GitHub and navigating code reviews - practical tools that are crucial for our roles.
My journey at Wise has been remarkable, having transitioned from a support associate in 2021 to engineering in 2024. Wise's encouragement and support for growth has been instrumental in my career path.
My goal is to become a skilled full-stack engineer, and I believe I’m in the right place to achieve that.
Tips for if you're thinking about joining Wise
For those starting their journey at Wise, my advice would be not to fear asking questions - embrace them as opportunities to learn. Trust me, everyone says this, but it's true.
Don't be scared of growth; Wise is very supportive. Be patient with yourself, even if your journey seems slow. Self-learning takes time, but it's worth it.
Lastly, network actively, embrace feedback, take initiative, and remember to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
