Meet Rajat, one of our Senior Developers

We caught up with Rajat Meena, a Senior Developer, who made the move from Germany to join our team in Tallinn. He shares his inspiring journey, detailing what motivated his relocation, the support he received from Wise, and his experiences settling in.

What has your experience been like working at Wise?

My journey at Wise these past 6 months has been great. Before joining, I worked as a software engineer in Germany, where I developed a keen interest in fintech. I had been a long time user of Wise, so when the opportunity arose to be a part of a company I admired, it felt like a natural career step.

Coming from a different tech background, there was definitely an adjustment period of getting used to how things work in fintech. There's a lot to learn about financial systems and regulations, which can be challenging at times, but my team has been so helpful in getting me up to speed.

What I've noticed is that teams here have quite a bit of autonomy in how they work. We get to make technical decisions and contribute ideas pretty freely, which is nice. I also work with people from various backgrounds, which makes the day-to-day work more engaging.

What influenced your decision to relocate?

When the opportunity to relocate to Tallinn came up, I felt a mix of excitement and uncertainty. I was living in Germany and ready for a new challenge, but making the decision wasn’t easy. I was excited to join a company I admired and although Tallinn is a small city, its vibrant culture appealed to me. I appreciate how everything is within reach; I can bike or walk most places.

Although relocation was a difficult decision, Wise's support made it easier, especially knowing they had a smooth relocation process. As a longtime user, I already felt connected to the company and wanted to be part of it.

How did Wise support you in relocating?

In terms of the relocation package, it was definitely comprehensive. Wise handled documents, visas, flights, and accommodation, and offered help with personal belongings. Wise guided me through the onboarding process, helping with documents and local visa procedures. This support was a big relief, especially as I navigated settling into a new city.

What challenges did you face?

Adapting to life in Tallinn came with its own set of challenges. Initially, I found navigating the city tricky and relied heavily on maps. However, the fact that locals speak English has made a big difference. I’m still working on forming a social circle, but playing padel has been a fantastic way to connect with others. There’s a group at Wise that plays regularly, and it’s been a great opportunity to make new friends and have fun.

What's been the best part about relocating?

One of the most rewarding aspects has been the lifestyle change. I now live near the beach, which I didn’t have before, and it’s really nice to take walks after work. Wise has organised some fantastic events, making it easier to unwind and feel connected to the team.

Our office in Tallinn is great—it's a modern space close to the city centre. Plus, we’ve got a flexible approach, so some days I work from home, and other days I come in to hang out with the team or if I need a change of scenery.

What advice would you give to other employees considering relocation to Tallinn?

Take full advantage of Wise’s relocation support. They truly make the process stress-free, and Tallinn is incredibly expat-friendly. Don’t hesitate to lean on the support system—it can make a significant difference!

I can definitely see myself staying in Tallinn for the long term. It’s a calm city that suits my lifestyle, and I like the neighbourhood I live in. Wise has provided the support I need to settle in, and I feel comfortable here. The city’s tech scene also offers many opportunities, so I see a lot of potential for growth.
