Tell us more about the Black Wisers Community at Wise?
Our global Black Wisers community is about fostering connection, support, and celebrating Black culture across Wise. We organise many events across the year, including Black Wiser Connects, which are always a highlight—great food, great company, and a chance to connect with fellow Black Wisers from different locations. These moments go beyond celebrating culture; they’re also a way to build strong, meaningful relationships. We offer support to one another, helping us stay connected and grow as a community.
Our global Black Wisers Community is around 300 employees and growing! More Black Wisers are moving into management roles, reflecting Wise's commitment to hiring and nurturing underrepresented communities. Whether it’s over a meal or a quick virtual coffee, the Black Wisers community is always active, supportive and welcoming!
Beginning this year, we launched our Black Wiser Working Group, a group of dedicated Wisers committed to accelerating Black representation and inclusion at Wise. We have several ongoing workstreams, such as developing our ethnicity based representation goals, building an ethnically diverse leadership pipeline, providing anti-racism training (launching this month!), investing in community-building and exploring external partnerships that support underrepresented communities in the tech industry. We’ve partnered with Coding Black Females and AfroTech this year.
Lastly, I am excited that we’re also supporting our customers who want to send money to the region i.e. to Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa.
What does Black History Month mean to you personally?
As a Nigerian, Black History Month is a time to reflect on the strength and contributions of Black people globally. It’s about celebrating our culture, traditions, and progress, while honouring the struggles and courage of those who fought for freedom. It’s a moment to acknowledge Black excellence, past and present.
What has been your proudest moment at Wise?
There have been many moments during my time at Wise where I’ve truly felt like I belonged and was making a meaningful contribution to the mission. In my first year, I became the Card Product Expert where I worked with engineers to create an in-app feedback feature, allowing customers to share their feedback directly. This not only helped the engineers understand what features customers wanted but also led to real product improvements, making me feel fulfilled and proud of the impact I was having.
One of my first moments came just a few days into joining. I noticed that a FAQ was missing important information about a feature we offered. I flagged this to my Team Lead, who encouraged me to submit a ticket to get it updated. Within hours, the FAQ was revised, and this experience gave me the confidence to speak up about improvements, knowing that my voice mattered, regardless of my background or race.
In my second year, I had the incredible opportunity to represent Wise in awarding scholarships to three female University of Tartu students. This initiative supported women in IT, providing mentorship and networking opportunities alongside financial support. It was such a proud moment to be part of Wise’s commitment to empowering women in tech.
Now, in my third year, I’m a FinCrime Specialist and a representative of the Black Wisers community. I remain excited about the opportunities for growth and impact each day.
How can Allies within the workplace best support our Black community?
Allies can support the Black community at work by listening, learning about Black history and culture, speaking out against racial bias, and offering mentorship and opportunities for growth. This helps foster a more inclusive and supportive workplace.
We’re proud to share that in our recent Employee Engagement survey, we ranked in the top 5% of tech companies for inclusion! Read more about DEI at Wise and our 12 global Wise Communities below.
