Product Compliance: balancing regulation and customer impact

Posting date: 13/11/25

Yann De Rudder, Group Product Compliance Lead in our Brussels office shares his insights in working in Product Compliance at Wise.

"In Product Compliance, you’re not just interpreting regulations; you’re translating them into concrete product decisions.”

Tell us about your journey before joining Wise

I initially started in Consulting before joining Wise but I found myself wanting to move into an in-house role where I could directly build and implement solutions. Wise reached out in 2022 about a new function in the Product Compliance team, and after the initial intro call, I was immediately excited. The role offered a chance to work directly with product teams—shaping design and functionality—while balancing regulations to deliver compliant, customer-friendly solutions.

I was also drawn to Wise’s mission in international payments and its genuinely customer-centric approach. Brussels was the natural home base: the team here is incredibly international and diverse, and the role sits in a truly global setup, so I partner daily with colleagues in the UK, US, Australia and beyond.

For those who don’t know, what does it mean to be a Product Compliance Lead at Wise?

As the Product Compliance Team Lead for Europe, I ensure our most impactful product initiatives have the right product compliance coverage, priorities are aligned across stakeholders, and teams get clear, actionable regulatory guidance. It isn’t just a management role–I stay hands-on in projects while giving my team the tools, context, and support to succeed.

There’s no ‘typical day’. At the core, I partner with product teams to land compliant, customer-friendly solutions: advising on new product launches, refining controls on existing features, implementing new regulatory requirements, helping resolve incidents, and responding to queries from banking partners and regulators.

It’s fast-moving and collaborative—we work closely with Legal, Compliance, Product, Engineering, Banking, and Operations to keep delivery on track and risk in check.

What would surprise someone about your role?

The sheer variety and how hands-on it is. You’re not just interpreting regulations; you’re translating them into concrete product decisions. One day I’m reviewing screens and user flows; the next I’m deep in the mechanics of payment schemes; another I’m combing through data to spot potential money laundering patterns. Within the Product Compliance team, there's rarely something that "isn't your job" which keeps everything really exciting!

What are some of the exciting technical challenges that those in Product Compliance get to tackle?

One of the key projects I’ve worked on is our cashback initiative–this is a benefit we introduced for Wise customers. The idea is simple: depending on how much money a customer holds in their Wise account, they receive a return funded by the money we earn as a company by safeguarding customers' funds with partner financial institutions.

Because Wise operates as a payments institution and cannot pay interest, I led the regulatory assessment and helped design a compliant structure and clear rules that deliver a similar benefit. I worked closely with our Product team to build the underlying processes, partnered with Legal to draft the product specifications, and collaborated closely with Marketing to help customers understand the benefits. From the feedback we regularly receive from customers, it seems to be a great success.

What advice would you give to someone applying for Wise?

Don’t be discouraged by perceived skill gaps. Product Compliance spans many domains, and no one is an expert in all of them. We look for curiosity—people who dive into unfamiliar areas, ask thoughtful questions, experiment, and learn quickly on the job.

Wise is a mission-driven company, and the manner in which Product Compliance works—how we operate and the type of input we provide—reflects this. It's definitely worth taking the time to truly understand the mission of Wise and consider how you could contribute to it in the role you’re applying for.
