"A startup within a scale-up": Life as an Engineer in Wise Platform

Posting date: 26/1/26

“As an engineer here, you aren't siloed in a technical world. You’re expected to reach out across teams, understand why deals do or don't go through, and solve problems with urgency.”

Engineer, Wise Platform

Tell us about your journey before joining Wise and what led you to joining the team?

My career has been diverse, starting in healthcare consulting where I fell in love with work that has a tangible impact on people’s lives. In my healthcare consulting career, I realised I loved working with clients, helping people and making a difference to their lives. The impact I was making was really evident. While I loved the client-facing aspect and the value of that work, I wanted to apply that mindset to technical challenges. This led me to transition into Engineering, focusing on the digital document and analytics domains, and API standardisation.

My decision to join Wise was sparked by a conversation during a trip to Estonia with my friend. I came across a Wiser (employee at Wise) who spoke so passionately about their job and the culture at Wise that it really stuck with me. When I moved from Dublin to London, I remembered Wise from our conversation and applied. The interview process was fast and smooth, confirming everything I’d heard from the Wiser: this is a place for impact and growth.

Fast forward to today, and I’ve been here since 2024 working as an Engineer in the API Experience team.

For those that don’t know, what is Wise Platform?

Simply put, Wise Platform, takes the infrastructure that powers Wise and embeds it into the world's largest banks, enterprises, and financial institutions. We enable partners like Morgan Stanley to offer our fast, transparent international payments directly to their own customers, right inside their own apps. In some cases, you wouldn't even know you’re using Wise. We work in the background orchestrating the money movement, exchanges, and Know Your Customer (KYC) processes, all under the partner’s own brand.

Internally, we operate with the agility and speed of a startup. We have the foundations and deliberate planning of a mature company, but the agility of a small team. As an engineer here, you aren't siloed in a technical world. You’re expected to reach out across teams, understand why deals do or don't go through, and solve problems with urgency. It’s the best of both worlds: the excitement of building something impactful, with the safety and reliability of Wise backing you.

Tell us about your day to day role

I work in the team that builds the bridge between Wise and our partners (like banks or platforms). My job is to make sure that bridge is sturdy, secure, and easy to use.

  • Strategic tooling: We don’t just wait for requirements. We proactively identify opportunities to reduce friction for our partners. Currently, I am focused on building self-service tools that allow partners to build and maintain their integrations independently, offering our customers an enterprise-grade experience and at the same time removing bottlenecks with our technical support teams.

  • Scalable architecture: Once opportunities are identified, we manage the full lifecycle of the feature. This involves deep discovery work—understanding the scope, stakeholders, and architectural requirements—before building solutions that impact everything from login systems to our Partner Sandbox environment, where we test things out before they go live.

  • Support: Part of my week is dedicated to maintaining the systems we have in place for existing partners. If something breaks or a partner has a question, I’m part of the rotation that jumps in to fix it and ensures our service remains reliable.

Can you tell us about a project where you felt you made a direct impact?

Within the API Experience team, we ensure that when other companies connect their software to Wise, it works perfectly. A standout moment for me was working with the team at Google on our joint Google Pay project. My job was to help redesign the architecture to make it even more seamless for partners to use us—kind of like moving from a manual check-in desk to a self-service kiosk.

It was a high-pressure project, but we delivered it ahead of schedule. Because it worked so seamlessly for Google, we realised we could use this same model to make life easier for every other partner we work with. It was the first time my parents actually understood what my job actually is!

Talk to us about your growth at Wise so far

My growth at Wise has been about stepping out of the 'tech bubble.' In previous jobs, I was a software engineer behind a screen. But here at Wise, I was given ownership of a high-visibility project early on. This required me to talk to tech teams across the entire business—explaining not just how we were building things, but why it mattered. I even had the chance to speak on stage at our ‘Tech Days’ session that took place during our company-wide 'Mission Days' event to explain how Wise Platform collaborates with the rest of the company.

To be honest, when I was first handed the Google pilot, I felt a wave of imposter syndrome. I kept asking myself, 'can I be doing this alone?'. That is where the support from my Lead and my team (including Sam, pictured below) changed my mindset. They saw potential in me before I saw it in myself, creating an environment where I felt empowered to make decisions, knowing I could rely on them if I needed support.

What’s your advice for anyone looking to join Wise Platform?

When joining a team in Wise Platform, you’re not just an engineer or a Product Manager; you’re a core part of the structure where you’ll wear many hats and collaborate with different teams. Your role isn’t limited by your job title and you’ll be expected to jump in, help out across the board and speak to people across the entire team.

It’s the perfect environment if you want to make a tangible impact and test out new ideas without fear of failure.
