My journey to Wise Platform

From studying Law to transforming global payments, discover how Ollie Conetta, Senior Business Development Manager, joined Wise Platform 🚀

“At Wise, you’re not locked into a single career path. Whether it’s moving regions, shifting focus areas, or working across different business verticals, you are empowered to shape your career in a way that aligns with your goals.”

Tell us about your journey before joining Wise Platform

Before joining Wise Platform, I studied law and then transitioned to American Express, where I worked in FX, issuing, and acquiring. That’s where I first encountered how slow and expensive cross-border payments can be which sparked my curiosity about financial systems and how they could be improved. I later moved into fintech, working in open banking and core banking, which gave me firsthand experience in how smaller companies tackle real-world challenges.

I joined Wise because I believed in our mission—making global payments fairer and more transparent for everyone, everywhere. Banks often advertise "fee-free" transfers while hiding fees in exchange rate markups, and I’ve seen friends and family unknowingly overpay. At Wise, we’re tackling this issue head-on, and that’s what keeps me motivated. It’s a place where I can grow my career while contributing to something meaningful. If you care about making finance fairer and more accessible, Wise is a great place to be.

How has your role evolved over time?

I initially started in the Account Management team, looking after enterprise accounts in EMEA. Given the scale of Wise Platform’s partnerships, I also collaborated with enterprises in North America, working with companies such as Deel and Remote as well as more traditional banks. My role was to strengthen these partnerships while working closely with our product teams to refine what we build and enhance the embedded payment experience for our partners.

Last year, I had the opportunity to relocate to Sydney with Wise and support some of our APAC partners. Wise made my move to Sydney seamless, supporting me through the transition and enabling me to gain new experiences in APAC while continuing to grow within the company. If you're looking for a place that encourages career mobility — whether across roles or regions — Wise makes this possible as well. Working with high-profile banks and enterprises like Bank Mandiri in Indonesia, Moin in South Korea, and Mox by Standard Chartered in Hong Kong gave me invaluable exposure to the different requirements and opportunities in global payments. And now, I’m back in London, driving our business development efforts for online platforms in Europe.

At Wise, you’re not locked into a single career path. Whether it’s moving regions, shifting focus areas, or working across different business verticals, you are empowered to shape your career in a way that aligns with your goals.

How would you describe the culture at Wise?

At Wise, you're empowered to take ownership of your role and drive meaningful impact. We celebrate our successes, but we also prioritise retrospectives to learn from our challenges and continuously improve. The culture is truly defined by our people — intelligent, friendly, and always ready to lend a hand.

Wise also truly offers flexibility in how you grow. Whether you're eager to tackle new challenges or explore different areas of the business, there's a strong culture of support for your ambitions. Maintaining this culture while scaling fast isn’t easy, but it’s clear that the leadership team prioritises keeping Wise a great place to work.

What’s something individuals can proactively do once they join Wise to make an impact?

Connect with as many people as possible! There’s so much knowledge and passion across different teams and departments, and learning from others will help you navigate Wise more effectively. Early on, I struggled with understanding the payroll vertical through online materials, so I reached out to our internal payroll team. Over the past year or two, we’ve worked so closely together and they’ve taught me  so much  that I feel like they’re in my team!

But that’s why Wise is great — people are happy to help wherever they can.
