Using AI in our Recruitment Process
At Wise, AI helps us work smarter. But there's a difference between using it as a tool to refine your ideas and using it as a substitute for your own judgment.
This guide sets out what you can expect from Wise regarding our use of AI during recruitment, as well as our expectations for how you may use AI across your application and interview journey.
How Wise Uses AI During the Recruitment Process
We are committed to maintaining a fair, transparent, and human-centred hiring process:
Assisting our teams: We may use AI tools to help summarise application details, support scheduling, or refine job descriptions so our hiring processes run smoothly.
Human judgment at the core: AI does not make hiring or rejection decisions at Wise. Every application, task submission, and interview evaluation is reviewed directly by our recruiters, hiring leads, and team members.
Focusing on real-world evaluation: In line with how our teams work internally, we evaluate your own logic, reasoning, and critical thinking—including how you review and refine output from tools like LLMs
How We Expect Candidates to Use AI
We view AI through a clear principle: AI is a great tool that should support, rather than replace, candidate input.
Below are our expectations for how you use AI across the stages of our hiring process:
1. Application
Your application helps us see your real background and experience.
What's expected & encouraged:
- Using AI for CV formatting, checking, and organising your background.
- Structuring your experience clearly.
What's not:
- Submitting fully AI-generated cover letters, application answers, or CVs.
Your Voice:
- We're direct and always honest. AI can sometimes sound like a polite corporate brochure. We want to hear your voice.
- Why: If your cover letter or application answers sound like a robot, we lose your voice in the process. If a submission feels too generic it usually lacks the authenticity we look for.
Interview Preparation
Where AI can level up your prep:
Research Wise:
We have a range of products and a very specific mission. Use AI to summarise our latest mission updates or to help you understand how a specific financial regulation might impact a company like ours. Come prepared with good questions.
The Wise Way: Use AI to build a foundation of knowledge so you can ask us better questions during your interview.
1
Refining your stories:
We love the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result), but we don't love corporate fluff. Use AI to make your examples clear and focused on impact. Good examples of impact could be where you made a clear difference, helped customers, saved time/money or led a successful project.
The Wise Way: During your preparation for an interview, ask an LLM to find the impact in your story. If you can't clearly show how you helped a customer or saved the company money/time, the story isn't ready for Wise.
2
Role-playing the Hard Questions:
Turn AI into your interviewer. Ask it to give you feedback on whether your answers are too vague or not relevant to the question.
3
Live Technical & Stakeholder Interviews:
Whether it's a live coding challenge, a finance technical round, or a stakeholder interview, we want to see your logic and reasoning in real-time. Using AI to generate code, look up formulas, or feed you responses during a live session is a red flag. Deploying live AI assistants/prompters during video interviews is prohibited.
Why: If you can't explain the "why" behind a solution on the spot, it doesn't matter how fast the AI generated it. We hire for live problem-solving, not prompt-engineering.
4
Technical Tasks or Case Studies
Where AI is just the copilot:
Using AI in Wise Assessments
What's expected & encouraged
Many roles at Wise include a practical test or a take-home task. We encourage you to use AI tools for data analysis, rapid prototyping, or structuring your work. Using tools to synthesise data and accelerate your execution is very similar to how you would actually work if you were here.
Do the strategic thinking yourself; use AI as a tool to execute efficiently and to proofread for clarity.
What's prohibited
- Submitting fully AI-generated work or using uncredited AI solutions for take-home assessments.
- Relying on AI to generate your entire strategy or response. It will likely produce "average" or "safe" answers. We look for your unique judgment, deep comprehension, and ability to navigate tough trade-offs with the customer front of mind.
- Note on Privacy: Candidates are not permitted to use personal AI notetakers, recording bots, or automated transcription assistants during interview rounds.
The Wise Way
Be transparent about how you used AI to arrive at your solution. We will ask you to present your task or take us through a Q&A session in the following round to understand the "how" and "why" behind your approach.
Role-specific instructions
The recruiter can provide any specific instructions for how AI can be used for each role. If in doubt, please check with them.
Software Engineering roles: During our Pair Programming Interview Stage we want to see your technical competency, problem solving and critical thinking without the assistance of AI Tools. Similarly at System Design we want to understand how you consider an open problem, think about the components of a system and discuss trade offs. We value your unassisted opinions and reasoning rather than how AI can support you with this.
Show Us Your AI Workflow
We don't expect you to hide your use of AI—in fact, we want to see how you use it to work smarter. If you used AI to help build your case study or prepare your data, expect your interviewer to openly chat with you about it.
We won't quiz you on text-based strings or exact prompt phrasing. Instead, we want to hear about your AI workflow:
-
How do you structurally break down the problem to guide the AI toward a great outcome?
-
What blind spots, hallucinations, or overly generic ideas you caught in the AI's output?
-
How you layered your own critical judgment on top of the tool to make the result spectacular for Wise customers?
The 3 point check
Before you submit a task or join a call, run your material through these three quick questions:
- Is this my thought? (Did AI refine my idea, or invent it?)
- Is it simple? (Did AI add buzzwords I wouldn't actually say?)
- Is it customer-focused? (Does this solve a real human problem?)
